Being Fit Without Letting Food and Exercise Control You | Tiny Buddha

Editor?s Note: This is a contribution by Keith Lai

?Being happy doesn?t mean that everything is perfect. It means you?ve decided to look beyond the imperfections.? ~Unknown

Most people associate fitness with nothing but positive connotations.

Exercising is the alleged solution to obesity and stress.

Eating fresh, local, healthy foods is the age old secret to a long and disease-free life.

But what most people don?t realize is that striving to live a healthy lifestyle can carry some seriously negative consequences if you don?t approach it wisely.

Don?t get me wrong, I?m all for eating right and exercising, but the moment your life begins to revolve around your fitness, then you?ve already lost.

Sacrificing Your Life to be Healthy

In my early attempts to build a healthy and fit body that I could be proud of, I ruined my life.

My entire life would be structured around my workouts. My meals were planned at exact intervals.

And if I missed any of my workouts or if my meals weren?t up to my standards, I would consider myself a failure and would get incredibly upset.

Back then I took an ?all-or-nothing? approach to health and fitness. If I had one ?bad? day of eating, then the entire week would be considered a waste.

It was bad.

My perfectionist approach to fitness began drawing attention.

I would go to parties and eat nothing but raw veggies and water. People would question me, stare at me for why I was being so phobic about food.? My own parents began getting frustrated with me because I would only eat certain foods.

My so-called dedication to fitness turned into an obsession, one that overtook my life.

All that exercising and healthy eating was meant to compliment my life, not become it.

When You Take Fitness Too Far

When you weigh yourself every hour?

When you compensate the extra food you ate with even more exercising?

When you get angry because you missed your workout?

When you refuse to have cake at any wedding?

?then you?ve officially taken health and fitness too far.

Exercising and healthy eating are simply tools to help you live a happier and more fulfilling life. They are meant to make the things you enjoy doing even more enjoyable.

We all want to look good. We all want to be fit and healthy, but at what cost?

Finding the Middle Ground

If you want your life and fitness habits to work in synergy, then you need to find the middle ground.

The middle ground is where you can enjoy a piece of birthday cake without worrying about how it will make you look. It?s where you can miss a workout and not sweat it. It?s where you can go a day without weighing yourself.

But of course, finding the middle ground is no easy task.

Finding the middle ground isn?t so much about finding the perfect workout or diet as it is about forging the right mindset.

We all make mistakes. We all fail.

The most important thing to remember is how you failed. You must learn from your mistakes, as clich? as that sounds.

Find out what triggered you to overeat. Was it stress? If so, what?s causing that stress and what can you do to fix it?

Locate the root cause of your slip-ups and do your best to correct them.

A Life Worth Living

In this ultimate battle for health, in this pursuit of the perfect body, we sometimes fail to understand the true meaning of life and what?s really important.

Of course, everyone has different interpretations on the meaning of life, but I think we can all agree on one thing: life is meant to be enjoyed.

Right? If you?re not enjoying life, then what?s the point of living?

If all you think about is exercise and food and how certain things will affect your body, then you?re never going to truly enjoy the things that make you happy?

You?re not living your own life, but instead you?re living a life controlled by something as menial as eating.

That is not a life worth living.

What Is a Life Worth Living?

A life worth living is one where you can experience new foods without guilt. It?s one where you can pick up a fork and put it in your mouth without a care in world on how it?s going to make you look.

This is a life where you can go through the majority of your day without thinking about what time you?re going to the gym or whether you ate enough protein.

There?s just so much more to life than having an impeccable exercise and nutrition plan. When your life and fitness habits are working together in perfect harmony, you?ll find everything you do more enjoyable.

Food will taste better. Sleep will become more restful. And most importantly, an enormous load of stress and relief will be lifted off your shoulders.

How do you approach health and fitness? Do you control it or does it control you?

FACT CHECK: Anti-Obama film muddy on facts

WASHINGTON (AP) ? "2016: Obama's America," a new conservative film exploring the roots of President Barack Obama's political views, took in $6.2 million to make it one of the highest-grossing movies of last weekend. The film, written and narrated by conservative scholar Dinesh D'Souza, argues that Obama was heavily influenced by what D'Souza calls the "anti-colonial" beliefs of his father, Barack Obama Sr., a Kenyan academic who was largely absent from the president's life.

To document that claim, D'Souza travels to Kenya to interview members of Obama's extended family as well as to Hawaii and Indonesia, where Obama grew up. He also cites several actions and policy positions Obama has taken to support the thesis that Obama is ideologically rooted in the Third World and harbors contempt for the country that elected him its first black president.

The assertion that Obama's presidency is an expression of his father's political beliefs, which D'Souza first made in 2010 in his book "The Roots of Obama's Rage," is almost entirely subjective and a logical stretch at best.

It's true that Obama's father lived most of his life in Kenya, an African nation once colonized by the British, and that Obama's reverence for his absent father frames his best-selling memoir. D'Souza even sees clues in the book's title: "Notice it says 'Dreams From My Father,' not 'of' my father," D'Souza says.

But it's difficult to see how Obama's political leanings could have been so directly shaped by his father, as D'Souza claims. The elder Obama left his wife and young son, the future president, when Obama was 2 and visited his son only once, when Obama was 10. But D'Souza frames that loss as an event that reinforced rather than weakened the president's ties to his father, who died in a car crash when Obama was in college.

D'Souza interviews Paul Vitz, a New York University psychologist who has studied the impact of absent fathers on children. In Obama's case, Vitz says, the abandonment meant "he has the tension between the Americanism and his Africanism. He himself is an intersection of major political forces in his own psychology."

From there, the evidence D'Souza uses to support his assertion starts to grow thin.

D'Souza says Obama's mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, shared his father's left-leaning views. After living in Indonesia for several years, D'Souza said, Dunham sent the younger Obama to live with his grandparents in Hawaii so he would not be influenced by her second husband, Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian who worked for American oil companies and fought communists as a member of the Indonesian army.

"Ann separates Barry from Lolo's growing pro-Western influence," D'Souza says in the film. Obama has said his mother had sent him back to Hawaii so he would be educated in the United States.

In Hawaii, D'Souza asserts with no evidence, Obama sympathized with native Hawaiians who felt they had been marginalized by the American government when Hawaii was becoming a state. D'Souza also asserts ? again with no evidence ? that Obama had been coached to hold those views at Punahou, the prestigious prep school he attended in Honolulu.

"Oppression studies, if you will. Obama got plenty of that when he was here in Punahou," D'Souza says, standing on the campus.

In Kenya, D'Souza interviews Philip Ochieng, a lifelong friend of the president's father, who claims the elder Obama was "totally anti-colonial." Ochieng also discloses some of his own political views, complaining about U.S. policy in Afghanistan and Iraq and saying the U.S. refuses to "tame" Israel, which he calls a "Trojan horse in the Middle East." D'Souza seems to suggest that if a onetime friend of Obama's late father holds those opinions, so too must the president himself.

D'Souza then goes through a list of actions Obama has taken as president to support his thesis. Many of them don't hold water:

? D'Souza rightly argues that the national debt has risen to $16 trillion under Obama. But he never mentions the explosion of debt that occurred under Obama's predecessor, Republican George W. Bush, nor the 2008 global financial crisis that provoked a shock to the U.S. economy.

? D'Souza says Obama is "weirdly sympathetic to Muslim jihadists" in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He does not mention that Obama ordered the raid that killed Osama bin Laden and the drone strikes that have killed dozens of terrorists in the region.

?D'Souza wrongly claims that Obama wants to return control of the Falkland Islands from Britain to Argentina. The U.S. refused in April to endorse a final declaration on Argentina's claim to the islands at the Summit of the Americas, provoking criticism from other Latin American nations.

?D'Souza says Obama has "done nothing" to impede Iran's nuclear ambitions, despite the severe trade and economic sanctions his administration has imposed on Iran to halt its suspected nuclear program. Obama opposes a near-term military strike on Iran, either by the U.S. or Israel, although he says the U.S. will never tolerate a nuclear-armed Iran.

? D'Souza says Obama removed a bust of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill from the Oval Office because Churchill represented British colonialism. White House curator William Allman said the bust, which had been on loan, was already scheduled to be returned before Obama took office. Another bust of Churchill is on display in the president's private residence, the White House says.

With choreographed conventions, is something lost?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As Chris Christie's moment at the microphone neared, delegates to the Republican National Convention were atwitter at the chance to hear the New Jersey governor speak. After all, who knew what might happen? "He doesn't seem to have a filter," said David Shimkin, a delegate from New York.

But the famously freewheeling Christie did in fact have filters: He used a teleprompter, and he read from a speech that has been vetted and approved.

Americans hunger for authenticity ? or, at least, say that they do. The explosion of reality TV is testament to that desire for the unscripted moment (even if that unscripted moment is, well, scripted). So the slick choreography of the modern political convention, while understandable, also seems odd. And, some say, it's actually counterproductive to what the parties say they want to accomplish: generate passion that translates into votes.

"This regard for order, this insistence on order, it's just weird," says Richard Bensel, a professor of American politics at Cornell University.

It's that need to control the message and the messengers that led Texas Congressman Ron Paul to hold his own alternative rally Sunday in Tampa, Fla., drawing a crowd of thousands. "It's exactly what the Republican Party should have wanted ? real spirit, real emotion," Bensel says. "That enthusiasm shouldn't be offstage. It shouldn't be in an independent rally."

But it's the way things work these days. And Robert Lehrman, who was Vice President Al Gore's chief speech writer for three years, says that if he were GOP nominee Mitt Romney, he would insist on an orderly convention.

"You're trying to show a unified, strong party that represents your views," says Lehrman, author of the 2009 book "The Political Speechwriter's Companion." ''And to have those kinds of debates doesn't help the campaign."

"Used to be 30 years ago, you had platform fights, and they would come from the floor and be debated," he says. "Now, they had some platform stuff on CSPAN, where 30,000 people watch it. But 30 million people have no idea about those things."

In the 19th century, the candidates mostly avoided the conventions altogether. In 1860, Lincoln stayed home in Springfield and his supporters did the work. To do otherwise, Lehrman says, "was considered immodest."

Harry Truman was such a terrible speaker that his aides, at the 1948 Democratic convention, decided to give him a list of talking points instead of a speech. To make things worse, just as he reached the stage, a woman rushed up with a cage full of "doves of peace" ? which promptly got loose and, as one aide would later write, "did what pigeons do." The speech went on to be one of Truman's more memorable, but it's hard to forget the pigeons.

There was a time when a rousing convention speech could make history. William Jennings Bryan was a little-known former Nebraska congressman when he arrived in Chicago for the 1896 Democratic National Convention to make a speech in favor of the free-silver movement. Most newspapers covering the event listed him sixth or lower ? if at all.

"He was technically a candidate, but in the way, say, Ron Paul is. Even less than that, actually," says Bensel, author of "Passion and Preferences: William Jennings Bryan and the 1896 Democratic Convention." But after Bryan delivered his now legendary "Cross of Gold" speech, he walked away with the party's nomination ? and a place in the history books.

Sociologist and essayist John Shelton Reed understands that the Republicans don't want another "Pat Buchanan moment" ? the former presidential candidate's infamous "culture war" speech at the 1992 GOP convention in Houston.

"There is a religious war going on in this country," Buchanan thundered from the podium. "It is a cultural war, as critical to the kind of nation we shall be as the Cold War itself. For this war is for the soul of America. And in that struggle for the soul of America, Clinton and Clinton are on the other side, and George Bush is on our side."

"Everybody seemed to agree that was not helpful," Reed says. "They didn't check it in advance, I'm pretty sure."

Christie is famous for speaking bluntly and loudly. But he understands that Tampa is not the place for winging it. In an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Christie acknowledged as much. "I don't use text almost ever," he said. "So most of the time I think about what it is I want to talk about, and then I get up there and I talk about it."

Given the venue and the time restrictions, Christie said, "they want you to work off a text, and that's fine." But he noted that former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour reminded him that he needed to "be Chris.'"

"If that means I stray a little off the prompter every once in a while," he said, "that's the way it goes."

Christie did not stray much, except to add emphasis or focus his audience. And while he did seem a tad less spontaneous than usual, his delivery ? "I know this simple truth and I'm not afraid to say it" ? was every bit as powerful.

It's that delicate balance ? preparation without overpackaging ? that is so difficult to strike. Rick Andrews, who teaches improv at New York's Magnet Theater, works with businesspeople trying to communicate better. The trick for politicians, he says, is to try to "appear casual, off the cuff ? when you're not."

"We would be shocked if they weren't prepared," Andrews says. "But we also don't want them to appear to be overly prepared."

Republicans, including Romney, have openly mocked President Barack Obama's use of the teleprompter. But Ann Romney, the former Massachusetts governor's wife, seemed relieved to know she would not be up on that stage alone. She told reporters Tuesday that she had "never gone off of a written text."

"I had a lot of input in this, I must say, and a lot of, um, tweaking where I felt like was getting what I really wanted to say and from my heart," she said.

Whatever butterflies she might have had going in, they had flown soon after she took the stage. She even went off script at regular intervals, channeling Oprah Winfrey after a passage about mothers, wives, sisters and daughters: "I love you women, and I hear your voices," she shouted.

Mitt Romney has a reputation for being somewhat stiff. But Lehrman is looking forward to his performance Thursday evening ? particularly given that the GOP nominee has been working with an oratory coach. "I see him being more impassioned and more natural," Lehrman says. "He's been able to fake naturalness better."

And in the process, perhaps, something valuable is lost. That's how Bensel sees it. By sculpting their conventions so carefully, he says, both political parties are missing out on the chance to make history.

"The problem is, when you script the speech, the crowd isn't involved and there's no feedback, there's no spontaneity," Bensel says. "The whole connection between the party rank and file as audience and whoever's speaking is broken. You are just an audience. You aren't a participant in the creation of a political moment."

Quebec tensions rise as separatists headed for election win

VARENNES, Quebec (Reuters) - Less than two decades ago, in perhaps the most traumatic moment in modern Canadian history, the predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec came within a hair's breadth of voting for independence.

And while another vote may still be years away separatist sentiment is back on the agenda as an opposition party, dedicated to carving Canada into two, heads for victory in the September 4 provincial election.

The Parti Quebecois (PQ) complains that Quebec does not make enough from rich reserves of iron, zinc, nickel, copper and gold and wants to force mining firms to pay higher royalties. It also plans to make it harder for foreign firms to take over Quebec companies.

It will strengthen already tough language laws to ensure French dominates, and promises a third referendum on splitting off from Canada when the time is right.

"Time is playing against Canada in the sense that slowly but surely the attachment Quebecers have for Canada is withering," said PQ legislator Stephane Bergeron, 47, tipped as a likely minister in a future PQ government.

"I think reality is going to catch up with Canada," he told Reuters as he campaigned in his constituency of Vercheres, a separatist stronghold along the St. Lawrence River east of Montreal.

Quebec -- where 80 percent of the 7.8 million population are native French-speakers -- has always sat rather uneasily inside a largely anglophone Canada of 34.5 million, celebrating its own provincial holiday with far more fervor than the July 1 Canada Day.

To quit Canada, separatists would have to win a new referendum. The pro-independence side lost heavily in 1980, but the 1995 referendum was much tighter, and separatists won 49.4 percent of the vote.

PQ leader Pauline Marois says she would hold a referendum "tomorrow" if she felt sure of victory, but it looks unlikely now, given polls that put support for independence at only 40 percent.

For the time being she promises to focus on the economy, healthcare and education, assuming she wrests power from the ruling Liberals, as most pollsters expect.

VOLATILE VOTING

That said, the mood of the electorate here is traditionally more volatile than in the rest of Canada, both in federal and in provincial politics, and sentiment on independence can change quickly as well.

The PQ, which first took office in 1976, says Quebec is mature enough to break away. The party is ahead in the polls, in part thanks to disillusionment with Liberals after nine years in power.

A third party is the newly created Coalition for the Future of Quebec (CAQ), headed by a former PQ minister, which wants to put off talk of referendums for a decade and concentrate on the economy.

Pollsters can't say for sure if the PQ will win the majority they would need to hold a referendum, or if it will have a minority, and need support from other parties to push through important legislation.

Leger Marketing pollster Christian Bourque said voters were not overly enthused by Marois, who even supporters complain lacks the charisma needed to mount a referendum campaign, and preferred the government to focus on the economy. Marois would be the first ever female premier of Quebec.

"The electorate wants to get rid of the Liberals after nine years but they don't want the natural alternative option, which is the PQ," said Bourque. "So, you've got two-thirds of people who want to beat the Liberals and two-thirds of Quebecers who don't want the PQ."

Even a minority PQ win would set the stage for clashes with the federal government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, given that the party plans to accumulate as much power as it can.

The PQ wants to set up a separate Quebec citizenship and take full control of unemployment benefits, immigration policy and business development funds.

'TWO WORLDS, TWO PHILOSOPHIES'

Quebecers often complain they have little in common with the rest of Canada, particularly now that the right-of-center Conservatives are in power. Harper's tough-on-crime agenda and love of the English monarchy win him few friends here.

"It's two worlds, it's two philosophies ... we'd like to be 100 percent at home, that's the difference, to really have all our own laws," said photographer Gilles Duchesneau, a long-time PQ supporter. "Canada is a nice country, but it's a nice country to visit."

Pro-independence Quebecers might be inspired by events across the Atlantic. In Scotland, nationalists are pressing to hold a 2014 referendum that would pave the way for gaining independence from the United Kingdom.

Harper is refusing to comment on the Quebec election. But in the past he has often railed against separatists, increasing the sense of alienation among Quebecers.

Liberal Premier Jean Charest, his party under fire amid a damaging inquiry into corruption and angry student protests against higher tuition fees, says Marois would place a "sword of Damocles" over Quebec with her talk of independence.

"The last thing we need is referendum threats," he told her during a televised debate. "You're gambling at the casino with Quebec's future."

CAPABLE OF MAKING IT ALONE?

The French settled what is now Canada in the early 17th century and parts of major cities like Montreal and Quebec City still look more like Europe than North America - a fact that Quebec stresses gleefully in advertisements aimed at U.S. visitors.

But the French were forced to hand over control to Britain in 1763, and as recently as the 1950s and 1960s, English still dominated business. The majority francophone population led what it felt to be a second-class existence with little political influence and a marginalized language.

Denis Marion, mayor of the town of Massueville, recalls that a Montreal store assistant once snapped "Speak white" (English) at his grandmother. "Those are things you don't forget ... it's part of our genes," he said.

Now the conversation on the streets is in French and stop signs read "Arret" rather than "Stop." Vehicle license plates bear the motto "Je me souviens" ("I remember"), a reference to French rule, and blue and white Quebec flags, inspired in part by the ancient royal flags of France, flutter outside many houses.

The 1995 referendum was a moment of enormous upheaval for Canada and a few days before the vote, hundreds of thousands of people flocked to Montreal for a "unity rally" to persuade Quebecers to vote no.

The chances of a repeat look unlikely. An Ipsos-Reid poll in late June showed 49 percent of Canadians did not really care if Quebec broke away.

If Quebec breaks away no one can yet say what currency it would use, how big its debt would be and whether it would automatically become a member of the North American free trade pact alongside the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Bergeron, the lawmaker, is sure these questions can be resolved amicably, yet economic issues worry some supporters.

"A lot of people want to see the precise figures. If we become independent how much will it cost and how big will our debt be?" pensioner and long-time PQ voter Norman Nobert said at a meal for retirees in the town of Varennes, which is part of Bergeron's riding.

Fellow PQ supporter Huguette Plante fretted whether Quebec would be able to exploit its own rich mineral resources.

"As part of Canada we are stronger economically. Are we capable of making it alone? That's the problem," she said.

Airline industry woes chip away passenger choices

Air passengers face higher fares, fewer flight choices and crowded aircraft as European carriers trim seating capacity growth or cut routes altogether, as they battle to salvage profits and fend off the impact of rising fuel prices.

With jet fuel prices near record highs at the same time as taxes and airport charges rise, airlines are curbing the growth of capacity - the number of seats they make available - and the frequency of some flights to lower costs and not drive away customers already spooked by rising fares.

According to the Association of European Airlines, capacity among its member airlines eased by 4.6 percent in the first half of this year compared with the year-earlier period.

But that decline comes after an increase of almost 23 percent between 2004 and 2011, driven by new aircraft ordered by airlines when demand was much stronger than it is now.

"We have 10 to 20 percent overcapacity in Europe, based on the number of seats offered," Philipp Goedeking, managing director and airlines expert at consultancy AlixPartners told Reuters.

Deutsche Lufthansa for instance added more than 50 percent capacity between 2007, the airline industry's last peak, and 2011, according to Reuters data, boosted by the acquisition of carriers including Brussels Airlines and Austrian Airlines.

The low-cost segment has been growing even faster, with Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair adding 72 percent more seats and British peer easyJet growing by 59 percent.

Expansion has slowed dramatically this year, with Lufthansa adding only 2.3 percent capacity in the half of 2012 and British Airways owner IAG 2.6 percent. Easyjet added 5.9 percent more seats in the first nine months of its fiscal year.

Some airlines are now retiring older aircraft sooner than planned, delaying delivery of new planes or selling some smaller aircraft to shrink their fleet, but none want to be caught out with too little capacity when demand picks up again.

Australia's struggling flagship carrier Qantas Airways this week cancelled orders for 35 Boeing Dreamliner jets as part of a plan to cut costs at its loss-making international business.

The airline said it would eliminate loss-making routes and make cuts in jobs and spending, having posted its first annual loss in 17 years.

Most airlines saw profitability - in terms of revenue per seat offered - drop during the global financial crisis as demand for air travel fell faster than they could cut capacity. Since then they have regained ground, but there is concern a further deterioration of European economies will lead to a repeat.

SCRAPPING ROUTES

Spanish carrier Iberia's unit revenue, for instance, dropped to 5.05 euro cents in 2009 from 6.07 in 2007. IAG, the group created by the merger of Iberia and British Airways, had unit revenue of 6.72 euro cents in the first half of 2012.

Lufthansa still plans to grow this year but has cut its capacity expansion plans to 0.5 percent from 12 percent. Air France-KLM has also scaled down capacity growth, having already shrunk 20 percent before the crisis.

Many airlines are focusing on axing some of their less- profitable routes, especially short-haul services to secondary cities in Europe, hitting travelers who rely on regional airports - such as Britons with second homes on the continent.

Nicholas Blair, from Leicester in central England, bought a holiday home in the Loire region of western France five years ago, partly because Ryanair had regular flights to nearby Nantes from his local airport. However, the Irish carrier stopped services to Nantes late last year.

"It used to take us four hours door to door flying from East Midlands airport, but now we either have to fly to Dublin and change flights or go to Limoges, hire a car and drive, which makes it so much more inconvenient and much more expensive. One of the reasons we bought the property was because of the convenient and cheap travel to it," said Blair.

In Britain, regional airports have also had European services cut by airlines because higher airport charges that came into force this year have made it unprofitable for budget carriers to offer short flights to neighboring countries.

They have also been hit by the UK's air passenger duty (APD) and the winding down of low-cost carrier bmibaby after its parent was bought by IAG. It plans to scrap several Bmi routes - including to Amritsar in India and Casablanca in Morocco - after the summer, due to "poor revenue performance".

EasyJet recently announced plans to close its base at Madrid airport next year due to a combination of overcapacity, leading to low revenue per passenger, and rising airport charges.

FEEDER FLIGHTS

Ryanair routinely justifies route changes with the airport charges and taxes it pays, but it has shifted capacity in recent months from Spain and increased it in faster-growing Poland.

"The major driver is the deals they get from airports, but the economic environment and the nature of the destinations (if it is a sun or city destination) also plays a role," said Merrion Capital analyst Gerard Moore.

Legacy carriers like BA make most of their profit on long-haul flights and need to offer domestic and European flights to bring passengers to their hubs to fill long-haul seats.

"If 70 to 80 percent of an airline's passengers are transferring to other flights, you cannot do without feeder flights," AlixPartners' Goedeking said.

European airlines, stung by an economic crisis sweeping the continent, are also keen to add services to emerging markets in Asia and fast-growing nations in eastern Europe to tap into growing passenger numbers that can fill up bigger planes.

BA recently announced new routes from London Heathrow to South Korean capital Seoul and is competing with easyJet to win rights for 14 weekly flights from London Gatwick to Moscow, using slots formerly held by Bmi.

Data seems to show that airlines' efforts are paying off to some extent. The passenger load factor in Europe widened to 82.5 percent on international routes in June from 80.6 percent a year earlier, according to industry body IATA.

For domestic flights, the figure improved to 81.6 percent from 79.8 percent a year earlier, showing airlines are offering fewer seats that end up unused. But those figures do not take into account whether airlines are lowering ticket prices to lure more customers onto their planes.

Data from industry bodies IATA and ICAO show average fares globally increasing 1.4 percent between 2005 and 2010, during which time the price of oil - a key factor for airlines costs - rose by more than 40 percent.

Not everyone admits to viewing such trends in a negative light.

"I love price competition," Ryanair Chief Executive Michael O'Leary said on a recent conference call. "It ... means the competition blow their brains out even faster than would normally be the case."

Scrapbooking | The Stay At Homer

I can?t scrapbook. ?I?ve tried. ?I?ve really tried. ?Seriously, I?ve sat at a table with the intent to create a scrapbook and I?ve given it ?a go.? It?s my understanding that the stay at home parent is in charge of managing the family photos and arranging them into fun, memorable, scrapbooks. ?It?s not enough to just look at a bunch of pictures every now and again?.pictures from the picture bin that sits in the ?memory stuff box? that we keep in the only available spot in that one closet. ?No, we need a SCRAPBOOK! ?And with my wife at work, the burden is on me to creatively capture our life history into lovely 12 x 12 pages. ?And I suck at it.

But it just so happens that I have the ultimate answer to those of us who suck at the scrapbooking aspect, but want the scrapbooking aspect! ?HIRE A SCRAPBOOKER!?

Through the bizarrely wonderful journey that is my life, I came to know some amazing, hardcore scrapbookers and stampers. ?One of the first gals I met was a woman named Erika Martin. ?Super cool gal. ?And it was serendipity? ?Fate? ?Good luck? ?Something like that?..Gayle and I fell in love with her work, and so we commissioned her to create a scrapbook of the first year of Noble?s life. ?Here are some of the pages she made! ?UNREAL! I should apologize for the glare in some of the pictures. ?I refuse to take the pages out of the protective sheet?plus I think Gayle might kill me if I tried.

The cover to Noble?s book. I can?t even remember him looking like that!! That?s a baby right there!

This is one of my favorites.

There?s Noble?s personality! Incidentally, this will probably also be his smile at age 80 when his teeth fall out?

Another great one. This right here is the reason we had Erika do these for us. Never in my wildest could I put something this artistic together.

Noble?s first birthday. Erika leaves spaces on some pages for us to journal a memory, or write something of our own?.but we are too scared that we?ll wreck the page, so we haven?t written in them yet!

We basically sent her our jpg files and told her about some page ideas, and some important details about our lives, and she just ran with it! ?I also surprised Gayle by having Erika make a book about Alistair?s first year and gave it to her on our 10th anniversary, back in July. ?MAJOR brownie points achieved. ?LEVEL UP!

Here are some photos of Alistair?s scrapbook! ?UNREAL?AGAIN!

Alistair?s book cover. Keep in mind, I just sent her a bunch of pictures?this cover is 100% her creation, and it?s perfect!

One of my favorite Alistair pages.

The great thing is that I can look at this page and all my memories of being with Alistair at Manhattan Beach come flooding back. This is going to be crucial for me as I start ?losing it? in my old age. I already can?t remember to close the fridge door?.

Erika has fallen on an incredibly difficult situation. ?I was already planning on writing a post about her awesome work, and now it?s coming at a time when she really needs the word out. ?If you are somebody that wants to be able to flip through an artistic, beautiful scrapbook of your family, but you can barely cut a straight line, let alone draw much more than a stick figure (like me), then please check Erika out. ?And you?ll not only be getting something wonderful, but you?ll be?doing something wonderful for a fellow parent in need.

If scrapbooks aren?t your thing, she may have something else crafty that you might like! ?Check out Erika?s etsy shop!

Times like these remind me how fortunate I am. The idea that a friend is out there, possibly about to lose their home, not only saddens me, but it frustrates the hell out of me. ?If I can help her by posting to you all (I also did a little shopping on her etsy site) then I believe I have a duty to do that. ?I hope you take the time to read her story and hopefully peruse her wares.

Here is the post Erika sent out the other day, copied with permission.

I hesitated in putting this out, but we?re stuck. As most of your remember, back at the beginning of this year, we were in danger of losing our house to foreclosure due to David losing hours at work. So many of you rallied around us and bought from my Etsy shop and we were so blessed to be able to make a payment that kept us from having our home loan demanded in full. Since then, it?s still been tight, but we?ve been able to get a payment in each month without going past that dreaded ?Day 60.? Our loan officer has been very understanding and knows that we?re behind and trying our hardest to get caught up.

Unfortunately, being almost 2 months behind is no longer acceptable to the bank. I just got a call from our loan officer and she has her hands tied. Because town taxes and the yearly pay out of our home owner?s insurance are due September 1st, the bank is requiring us to be completely caught up by August 30th. That?s 10 days away! The bank won?t allow us to pay the differnce to make sure the escrow has enough for the taxes and insurance. They are requiring us to have those 2 payments we?ve been behind in by the 30th of this month. Even if we have just one payment in, the bank will still demand our loan in full. We?re stuck between a rock and a hard place.

As most of you know, David had his regular overtime hours cut last fall two months early. We were looking forward to his regular overtime again this summer because we anticipated that we could get caught up and be back on track. The company he works for hired a slew of temporary workers and gave them all the hours and cut the full-time employees (David and his co-workers) out of their overtime at the end of June ? 3 months ahead of time! That regular overtime is something he and his coworkers have had every year except this year. From a business standpoint, I suppose it made sense to his company?s owners, but from an employee?s standpoint, we and the rest of them are all hurting now due to losing that income.

So, here we are, this time with an even bigger obstacle. We have to come up with two month?s worth of mortgage payments in 10 days before the bank calls in our loan and we are put into foreclosure.

Because so many of you came to our rescue back in January, I want you to know that we are not a ?spendthrift? family. I run a pretty tight ship financially and we are very minimalistic. In June and a few weeks ago, I made the trip to Florida to both drop off and pick up my daughter for her missions trip. Our expenses were all paid for by the church we go to (gas money, meals), as well as my grandmother (the flights, our meals, rental car, gas in Florida, and any expenses that we needed when I took Girly and her cousin to Wonderworks). At home, we don?t eat out, I shop at the discount food store, we have a garden, we pinch every penny. Most of you that know me personally know that I?m a very frugal person. Unfortunately, we?ve found ourselves in a bind in spite of all of that.

David works as many hours as his work will give him. I?ve picked up hours at my friends? kennel when they have hours to give me, my tuition for my full-time schooling is completely paid for by grants, and I?ve been setting up at the farmer?s market in town when the weather works in my favor. Some people have asked why I don?t get a job outside the home, but that?s a bit of a catch-22 for us since we have a son with special needs that requires a lot of doctor visits, back and forths to school, and I also help to take care of my elderly grandfather (his appointments, cleaning his house, taking him on errands, helping him with his finances and bills, etc.). Because of this, my schedule has to remain flexible. This is why I try to find ways to make an income in a flexible way ? through working hours at odd times, doing the farmer?s market, and also through my Etsy shop and art classes here in my house. When David caps our his hours at work, it?s up to me to make up the difference and it?s a challenge I gladly face head on.

I?m a hard worker and I am also a fierce mama bear that doesn?t want her family to lose the roof over their head. We live in a very modest house and don?t have a lot of ?toys,? and we?re content to just have our bills paid, food on the table, and a roof over our head. We?re currently doing without hot water at the moment (since the end of July) because our priority right now is to get current with our mortgage. I applied for a grant for utilities and we should be receiving that in the beginning of September. It will allow us to refill the propane tank (yay for hot water again), put heating oil in the tank for the coming winter, and pay up some of our overdue electric bill. Yay for private grants!!

I have a great Etsy shop and would love to create some custom art for you or as a gift for one of your friends, I also have a lot of other fun things on there. I can do special requests, as well. I am willing to work hard for my family to keep our house. I hesitated even putting this up here because so many of you came to our rescue earlier this year, but I knew that if we lost the house, you would all wonder why I didn?t say something earlier.

So, we?ve got 10 days to come up with those two payments. If you could pass my Etsy link on to your friends (you can even share this post if you?d like to give some of our back story), we would appreciate it so much! And if there?s anything you?d like in my Etsy shop or would like to custom order, please let me know and we can work on it. I?ve got new stuff going up on the Etsy shop all week.

And we always appreciate prayers and positive thoughts. :)

Thank you so much for being such amazing friends!

Joy and the Boy

Joy and the Boy

Joy and the Boy are singer/songwriter Joy Dragland, and musician/producer Leo Sidran. Leo and Joy met on the jazz scene in Madison, Wisconsin in 2000, playing at jam sessions and occasional gigs together, but it would take a single defining event to kickstart their collaborative efforts. In October of 2000 they were invited to perform at a political rally at the State Capitol in Madison in front of 30,000 people. This was their first performance as a duo, and they realized sometime during that performance that they shared a deep musical connection. Both Joy and Leo are singer songwriters with diverse musical backgrounds. Joy was raised on folk, gospel and country music before she embraced jazz and soul music. Leo was fed a diet of jazz and r&b as a child, and later came to include more folk elements into his music. ..Joy Dragland started singing when she was a young child. She inherited her talent from her father, who taught her about country music and gospel. Joy started out singing in small coffee shops in Wisconsin. While she was at the University of Wisconsin earning her degree in English literature, she honed her skills both as a jazz singer and as a songwriter. Her love of literature is evident in her lyrics and her approach to story telling. ..Leo Sidran was raised in a musical family as well. The son of jazz musician, producer Ben Sidran, Leo started writing songs at a young age. By the time he was 15 he had written and recorded for the Steve Miller Band and had started working on his first solo recording. Leo co-produced Jorge Drexler's 2005 Academy Award Winning song, "Al Otro Lado Del Rio". The duo recorded their first CD, Paradise during the in 2001. The critical response to Paradise was tremendous. It was first released in Europe with sparkling reviews, and the first single "Let's Get It On" debuted in the Top 40 pop radio charts in Spain. Their second album, Soaking Wet, was recorded in Madison in 2004, but would not be released until 2007 when it came out first in Japan and later in the states. In 2005, both Joy and Leo moved from Madison to New York. They are currently finishing up an EP of new material. You can hear a couple of those new songs right here.

The Reverend John DeLore

The Reverend John DeLore, lest you fear there is any religious undercurrent to my music, let me assure you that I play Americana-infused indie-ish rock (I was ordained online in a blitzkrieg of whiskey). Recognize by the DELI Magazine as one of New York's "best emerging artists" of 2011/2012. Relesased three albums in the last couple of years & will be releasing their fourth album this Fall. The Reverend John DeLore?s 2nd album was recognized as "brilliant" by New York Magazine's "Approval Matrix" (http://nymag.com/arts/all/approvalmatrix/approval-matrix-2011-6-13/ ). The band has opened for Eric Burdon & the Animals at Irving Plaza, the Gourds at Music Hall of Williamsburg, and we've played lots of other great venues in the city (Mercury Lounge, Rockwood, Bowery Electric...).
