Michigan Republicans End Part of Union Tradition

For generations, Michigan was the ultimate labor stronghold ? a state built by factory workers for whom a high school diploma and a union card were the ticket to a middle-class life.

But it took only hours for Republicans to tear down a key part of that tradition, the requirement that all employees in a union workplace pay dues.

The swift action was the result of a decisive governor acting like a CEO and teaming with a supermajority of GOP allies in the statehouse to win a prize long sought by conservatives. It also provided a window into how state governments might work in an era when they are increasingly run by a single party.

Gov. Rick Snyder dropped his longstanding opposition to dealing with the contentious right-to-work issue Thursday.

Washington Redskins loss Sunday predicts Romney victory

Washington Redskins' loss Sunday predicts a Romney victory

Redskins fans might have been disappointed their team lost 21-13 to the Carolina Panthers, but Mitt Romney likely was not.

If the "Redskins Rule" holds up Tuesday, the Republican presidential nominee will become the country's 45th president.

The rule says a Redskins win in the team's final home game before Election Day keeps the incumbent party in power and a loss means the other party claims the White House.

Since 1940, the rule has predicted the winner 17 out of 18 times.

The only time the rule failed was in 2004 when the Redskins lost to the Green Bay Packers.

That year, Republican President George W. Bush won re-election over challenger and Democratic Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry.

FDA: 5 reported deaths with Monster drink link

(AP) ? The highly caffeinated Monster Energy Drink has been cited in five deaths and one non-fatal heart attack, according to reports that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating.

The reports claim that people had adverse reactions after they consumed Monster Energy Drink, which comes in 24-ounce cans and contains 240 milligrams of caffeine, or seven times the amount of the caffeine in a 12-ounce cola.

Although the FDA is investigating the allegations, which date back to 2004, the agency said the reports don't necessarily prove that the drinks caused the deaths or injuries.

"As with any reports of a death or injury the agency receives, we take them very seriously and investigate diligently," Shelly Burgess, a FDA spokeswoman, said in a statement.

News of the FDA's investigation follows a filing last week of a wrongful death suit in Riverside, Calif., by the parents of a 14-year-old girl who died after drinking two, 24-ounce Monster Energy Drinks in 24 hours. An autopsy concluded that she died of cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity and the medical examiner also found that she had an inherited disorder that can weaken blood vessels. But the child's parents claim Monster failed to warn about the risks of drinking its products.

Monster Beverage Corp., which touts on its web site that the Monster Energy Drink is a "killer energy brew" and "the meanest energy supplement on the planet," puts labels on cans that state that the drinks are not recommended for children and people who are sensitive to caffeine. The company, based in Corona, Calif., did not immediately respond to calls seeking comment on Monday, but said last week that it is "unaware of any fatality anywhere that has been caused by its drinks."

Monster is among a growing group of energy drinks on the market. Energy drinks are a tiny part of the carbonated soft drink market, representing about 3 percent of sales volume, according to a recent report by industry tracker Beverage Digest. But at a time when soda consumption is declining, energy drinks are becoming more popular: Last year, sales volume for energy drinks rose by nearly 17 percent.

Monster has benefited the most from the increase. Last year, Monster had a 35 percent share of the energy-drink market based on volume, while Red Bull had 30 percent and Rockstar had 19 percent, according to Beverage Digest. Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are far smaller players in the arena, with about 5 percent each.

Investors have warmed up to the drinks as well. In the past two years, Monster's shares have more than tripled, from about $22 and hit a high of about $79 in June. But on news of the FDA investigation, Monster's shares plunged $7.59, or 14.2 percent, to close at $45.73 in trading on Monday.

The increase in popularity has brought heightened scrutiny. The levels of caffeine in the drinks have raised worries: Although the FDA caps the amount of caffeine in soda to 0.02 percent, there is no such limit for energy drinks.

In August, New York state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman issued subpoenas to energy drink makers, including Monster, as part of the state's investigation of the industry. And in September, Senators Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., asked the FDA to take another look at the effect that caffeine and other ingredients in energy drinks have on children and adolescents.

Healthcare check proves healthy | Clarendon Citizen Online

Light crowds were handled easily by the volunteers and professionals conducting the SC Mission 2012.

Jack Justice/Clarendon Citizen - Light crowds were handled easily by the volunteers and professionals conducting the SC Mission 2012.

Clarendon County Healthcare providers and officials at all levels can hold their heads up high at the conclusion of this weekend?s SC Mission 2012-Coastal Plain free healthcare event. Throngs or crowds of people who needed health services did not materialize, giving a real nod to the fact that our existing system is alive and well and functioning to the needs of the population.

Checks like this are necessary and provide system indicators of some break down or inadequacy that needs addressing. But, Clarendon County has withstood the test which gives reason for living here.

In what could be labeled ?extreme care? the number of volunteers equaled the number of people who sought care on the first day. 250-plus, cheerful and dedicated volunteers, along with the health professionals providing the core services, insured those seeking care were ?hand carried? to every station.

Organization was prevalent all the way out into the parking areas around the complex. The mission system would rival any ?valet service? at a five-star hotel.

Local officials had studied well at other such events insuring there were no breakdowns from the time patients checked in until they reached the check out table. If any person appeared to be lost, in a matter of seconds someone would be at their side providing them personal help.

Color-coded t-shirts made it simple to identify the volunteers and the various levels of management for the event. Everything was well identified with signs and even footprints to keep the flow headed in the right direction and to the various stations.

Many city and county officials served as volunteers throughout the event. Their presence gave even more import to the idea that we live in a community that cares.

?This is definitely a worthwhile use of our energy and resources hosting the mission event,? cited Travis Pruden, Director of Wellness/Fitness within the Clarendon Health System. Fellow Director of Public Relations for the system, Jeffrey Black, remarked that ?the smoothness of every facet incorporated into the event is mind-boggling.?

Both,? Scherrie Cogdill, Director of the Cypress Foundation and Lesley Dykes, Director of Business Development could not help but show a ?broad grim as they moved about in their volunteer roles during the event.

There were 500 residents who had some facet of care rendered over the two-day period.

For more detailed information concerning this event, please contact Cassandra Brunson at 435-8463 ext. 3941.
